International Bog Day celebration to be held at The Red Moss in Balerno

THE Scottish Wildlife Trust will be holding events to celebrate International Bog Day later this month.

SWT”s Lothians Group is hosting an open day at Red Moss of Balerno reserve on the edge of the Pentland Hills in Edinburgh.

It will take place from 12 noon to 5pm on International Bog Day, Sunday 22 July.

Local experts will explain why the reserve is important as a unique habitat in the area guided tours, pond dipping and a wildlife quiz.

Lowland raised bogs like the Red Moss of Balerno take millennia to form but in the last 200 years the nation has lost over 94% of them.

The aim of International Bog Day is to highlight and celebrate the habitats for wildlife.

The Red Moss – the last remaining raised bog in the city of Edinburgh –  is regarded as an important haven for wildlife.

The wet peatland is perfect for the frogs, toads, lizards and dragonflies that can be spotted throughout summer and other wildlife too.

International Bog Day was created in Scotland in 1991 by SWT and been marked around the world every since.
