Anti-fracking rally place outside Scottish Parliament on Tuesday ahead of crucial vote by MSPs

#SGPConf 2017

CAMPAIGNERS calling for an outright ban on fracking across Scotland are to stage a final rally outside the Scottish Parliament before MSPs take part in a crucial vote.

They will gather outside Holyrood in Edinburgh at 1pm on Tuesday to make last minute representations to politicians heading for the chamber.

The Scottish Government has already announced it is extending its moratorium on fracking indefinitely – but they are facing mounting pressure to pass legislation that would enshrine that protection into law.

Scottish Greens MSP Mark Ruskell, his party’s environment spokesman, will be tabling an amendment to the move as he and fellow MSPs call for a full ban.

On the same day Friends of the Earth Scotland and The Broad Alliance will be staging a rally throughout the debate and vote up until around 5.30pm.

They say getting the government to move this far had been a “massive win” and paid tribute to those who fought for a fracking ban over the past six years.

In a statement, they said: “Although the ban is already in place, the debate is a chance to push the Government to go further and commit to putting the ban into law.”

“Ahead of the debate, we’ll be gathering outside the Scottish Parliament to raise the pressure on the Scottish Government and give MSPs the chance to meet with community activists.”

The debate is currently schedule to begin at around 2.30pm with a vote anticipated to happen sometime round 5pm.

Members of the public can attend by applying to the Scottish Parliament for tickets at this link.
