Beehive pops up in lobby of G&V Royal Mile Hotel in Edinburgh for National Honey Week

A FIVE-STAR hotel will open up its colony of bees to the public in a bid to raise awareness over their importance next week.

G&V Royal Mile Hotel in Edinburgh has 180,000 honey bees on the rooftop of its old town property in partnership with keepers Plan Bee Ltd.

But they will be putting on a pop-up hive in the ground floor lobby between next Friday and Sunday (Oct 27 – 29) as part of National Honey Week.

The idea will be explain more about bee-keeping, spin off products and protecting the local be populations.

Visitors will also learn more about the crucial role honey bees play in the environment and their rapid decline in recent years.

And they will get the chance to try fresh honeycomb straight from the hive.

It comes as the G&V celebrates the first year of three hives arriving at the 136-bedroomed hotel, which are also used to provide home-produced honey to guests.

It is thought to be the first hotel in Edinburgh to try the initiative.
